Video: Buying Hardwood Lumber

This video is from the series “Getting Started in Woodworking”. Watch it online at www.finewoodworking.com/start.

Recently, we welcomed our friends from Taunton Press to the lumber yard here at Kellogg Hardwoods. Taunton Press publishes Fine Woodworking Magazine and runs the website FineWoodworking.com. Asa Christiana, editor of Fine Woodworking, and Matt Berger, of Woodworking.com, have produced an excellent series of woodworking videos, called “Getting Started in Woodworking”. For one of their episodes, titled “Buying Hardwood Lumber,” they decided to stop by Kellogg Hardwoods Lumber in Bethel, Connecticut, and shoot some video for the episode.

During their visit, Matt and Asa shot some footage of our facilities here at Kellogg Hardwoods. The video focuses on buying lumber for a bookcase project, but the same principles apply when you’re looking for lumber for a wide plank flooring project.

Check out the video for tips on how to find a good lumber source, how to choose the lumber (at Kellogg, we are happy to help you with all these aspects), and the different species of wood you can consider. If you are planning a hardwood wide plank floor, you may be looking at hardwoods such as oak, maple, walnut, cherry, and so forth. The video includes information on quarter sawn wood – a process we recommend if you are going for the distressed look of antique flooring. Matt and Asa also cover the differences between select grades and other grades – such as the huge difference between a fine piece of select fir and a piece of construction fir.

It’s a very helpful video, and we were glad to see Matt and Asa at Kellogg Hardwoods. If you’d like to see the full series, check it out at www.finewoodworking.com/start.
